Where to Stay in Savannah, GA — Why the South Historic District Wins

Planning a stay in Savannah, GA? Here’s why the South Historic District is the best area — and what makes it different from the north side. The south is where our guests find peace, charm, and true Savannah elegance, and our two rentals put you right at the heart of it.

But, I’m here to give you information on the difference between the two, so keep reading for FAQs, etc.

And hey, if you have a question that’s not answered here, feel free to shoot me a text, email, or phone call.

South vs. North: Where’s the Best Area to Stay in Savannah’s Historic District?

Both the North and South Historic Districts are part of what visitors love about Savannah — beautiful squares, tree-lined streets, and historic landmarks. But where you stay does shape your experience.

The North: Closer to River Street and City Market. Livelier, louder, and often more crowded — especially at night with bars, rooftop lounges, and large hotel crowds. It’s great for nightlife, but not always ideal for that quaint atmosphere people associate with Savannah.

The South: Quieter and more residential in feel, but still filled with character. Here you’ll find charming wine bars, cozy brunch spots, and cocktail lounges — all just blocks from our rentals near Forsyth Park. You get the vibrant local scene without the tourist chaos. It’s peaceful, walkable, and distinctly Savannah.

5 Reasons Our Guests Choose the South Historic District

🌳 Quieter Streets: Peaceful nights without late-night party noise
No loud nightlife or midnight party crowds. You’ll wake up to birdsong, not bar fights. The North end near City Market can be fun — but it’s not where you want your bedroom. Up there, you’ll often hear bachelorette groups or trolley tours singing into the wee hours.

🏡 Historic Charm: Real homes, not high-rises
Think tree-lined streets, 19th-century homes, and wrought-iron balconies — not chain hotels or rooftop DJ parties. Staying here feels like stepping into Savannah’s soul. Our rentals date back to 1868, so you're literally sleeping where the horsemen and house staff once lived. If these walls could talk... There’s something undeniably special about experiencing a space with that kind of living history.

🚶 Walk Everywhere: You’re close to everything
You’re still within easy walking distance of River Street, restaurants, and squares — but you'll stroll through moss-draped oaks and quiet lanes, not crowds and congestion. And if you're attending a wedding at Forsyth Park (which many guests are), you're just a block away.

🛏️ Better Sleep: No midnight bar crowds
Guests often tell us they had the best night’s sleep of their trip here. The South end stays calm, even during festivals — perfect for couples and anyone who’d rather drift off to silence than street noise.

📸 Authentic Vibe: Full of character — and beauty
This isn’t staged charm — it’s the real Savannah. Cobblestone lanes, ivy-covered homes, gas lanterns, and moss-draped oaks create an atmosphere that’s just as magical in person as it is in photos. It’s elegant, intimate, and uniquely local — the reason we chose to live right here. And once you visit, you’ll understand why.

🍴 Local Tip — Most of our guests ask us where to eat before they even arrive.

Still Choosing Where to Stay? These FAQs Can Help

  • If you’re bringing a car, parking is much more difficult in the North Historic District (River St., City Market, etc). You will most likely have to valet or park in a garage, which can be expensive. In the South Historic District, however, you can usually find street parking (even for free). We have a detailed page just for PARKING.

  • Yes! Be Our Gaston is located in one of the most walkable parts of Savannah. Forsyth Park is steps away, and you can reach restaurants, coffee shops, and rooftop bars in just a few minutes — by foot. If you’re interested in learning more about our recommendations for these, we have pages dedicated to our favorites that include interactive Google maps:

  • Yes, Uber is readily available, as are pedicabs. People use both all the time.

  • I would say the South Historic District, hands down. I am from New Orleans and I know all about crime, unfortunately. Bay St. and River St. (both right by the river in the North Historic District) are comparable to Bourbon Street in New Orleans. This is where the trouble happens after 11 PM or so. The south, conversely, is residential like the Garden District in New Orleans. Far safer at night.

  • Both are stunning, but the South is more residential and romantic — while the North has more bars and busier streets. You definitely have more of the commercial vibe in the north. Our rentals are in the South, giving you the best of both worlds.

  • Yes — it's just a scenic 15- to 20-minute walk through some of Savannah’s most beautiful streets and squares. You’ll get the serenity of the South with easy access to experience River St. In fact, my daily run incorporates River St. We have the best of both worlds; we can get to the river in a heartbeat, but we live one block from Forsyth Park.

  • You can book directly through us (via our website, phone, etc), which will save you from paying the extra fees that large hosting platforms charge. You can also take a look at our reviews, if you want to see what others have said about their stay.
